Footpaths For The Future: Franklin’s Big Step Towards A Healthier Lifestyle

A 10-year plan to build 38 new and upgraded footpaths and crossings has officially launched in Franklin area, with construction now underway after a formal agreement between the Franklin Local Board, Auckland Council, and Auckland Transport.

Funded by a targeted rate of $1 per week — or $52 per year — the Franklin Paths Programme aims to improve connectivity, reduce vehicle use, and encourage healthier lifestyles.

“Our once-rural community is growing rapidly, and it’s time our infrastructure grows with it. Safe footpaths and recreational routes are an investment in the future of Franklin,” said Franklin Local Board Chair Angela Fulljames.

New call-to-action

The initiative, which has entered its operational phase, will roll out projects in the Pukekohe, Wairoa, and Waiuku subdivisions. These include safety upgrades at Reynolds Road and West Street, improved crossings at Woodhouse Road and Patumahoe Road, and enhanced facilities at Pukekohe Train Station.

Additional developments include new or improved pathways at Shelly Bay Road, Liberty Crescent, Clarks Beach Coastal Walkway, Clevedon Scenic Reserve, and the Sandspit Reserve Coastal Path.

The Local Board formally endorsed Phase 1 of the programme during its business meeting on 22 April, setting the stage for on-the-ground works.

The Franklin Paths Programme is a community-driven initiative designed to support one of Auckland’s fastest-growing areas.

Residents are encouraged to follow updates via the Franklin Paths Facebook page or sign up for the newsletter. A full list of projects is available on the Franklin Paths and Trails website.
