Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has retained the support of National Party MPs following an “urgent” 3.5-hour caucus meeting in Wellington on Wednesday.
Speaking at Parliament after the meeting, Luxon said he had the “full support of my caucus” following a confidence vote in his leadership.
His brief press conference lasted less than a minute, with Luxon taking no questions from reporters.
Having survived his second confidence vote, following the first in April, Luxon stressed the need for National to defeat opposition the next election.
Luxon called the 9.30am meeting amid mounting speculation over his leadership following a series of political missteps and clashes.
The meeting had been closely watched as questions grew over whether Luxon continued to have the backing of his MPs.
Minister Nicola Willis, Chris Bishop and Erica Stanford had been discussed as potential replacements if Luxon were to lose the leadership.
National MP Chris Penk had also been the subject of speculation that he was working to build support for Stanford. However, ahead of the meeting, Penk said he had “confidence in Christopher Luxon”.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith also publicly backed Luxon.
Several National MPs arriving at Parliament on Wednesday morning declined to publicly confirm their support for the Prime Minister.
The caucus meeting came as Luxon’s preferred-prime-minister rating fell again in the latest 1News Verian poll. Despite the drop, he remained the preferred choice for prime minister.
