Child injured after falling from moving school bus in Auckland
Auckland Transport and police have launched an investigation after a child fell from a moving school bus in West Auckland on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred on Laingholm Drive shortly after 3.30 pm when the rear door of the bus unexpectedly opened, causing a 12-year-old student to fall onto the road. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the child was taken to the hospital.
According to Stuff, a police spokesperson said the back door “inadvertently opened” before the student fell from the vehicle.
“The young person suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital in a stable condition,” they said.
“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances around the incident,” Stuff has quoted.
Auckland Transport confirmed the bus was travelling from Glen Eden Intermediate School at the time of the incident and was moving slowly when the fall occurred.
Duncan McGrory, AT service operations manager, said the driver acted quickly after the incident. “After the incident occurred the bus driver pulled over, checked on the student, and radioed the bus depot for assistance,” McGrory said, as quoted by Stuff.
“The bus company immediately called emergency services for assistance and informed Glen Eden Intermediate about the incident. “Auckland Transport and our bus contractor are urgently investigating this incident and working to get to the bottom of what happened as soon as possible,” he added, Stuff has quoted.
