Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust (BSCT) carried on the years-old tradition of celebrating the end of the year by organising a Christmas and end of the year party on Saturday, December 9 at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall in Auckland.
This fun-filled afternoon marked the presence of over 200 senior citizens and the presence of several eminent guests and dignitaries. Members of Parliament Michael Wood, Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Kanwaljit Bakshi and Dr Parmjeet Parmar along with Auckland District Police Commissioner Karyn Malthus and Judge Ajit Sarwan were present at the event.
“The seniors thronged to the venue excitedly all dressed up in fabulous outfits to be a part of this special event,” BSCT Chairman Jeet Suchdev said.
The celebrations commenced with the traditional prayers, followed by felicitation of Smita Biswas, volunteer for Bharitya Samaj and Ella Kumar, member of Puketapapa local board for their tireless efforts and contributions towards the organisation's activities through the years.
The entertainment section of the event included a stunning dance performance was by Simran Chadha, and Ranjana, followed by live music and dance with the members.
“The seniors look for an opportunity to enjoy and make others laugh. Every time we host an event, the seniors make sure we conclude the event with loud music and dance with one another,” BSCT Secretary Roopa Suchdev added.
Vidya Teke, a prominent singer in the community, and actor and singer Jagdish Punja performed retro songs to entertain the audience. With the latter’s stage performance, the crowd joined them on stage in dancing.
“The stupendous success of the event was a result of contribution and love of the executive committee of Bhartiya Samaj, volunteers, organisers, performers and the community that feverishly supported us to make this event a grand success and helped achieve yet another milestone for BSCT in our efforts to socially engage our senior members,” Mr Suchdev acknowledged.
Christmas for Bal Vikas Language and Cultural School
As a part of the annual Christmas celebrations, Bhartiya Samaj also hosts a fun event for the children of Bal Vikas Language and Cultural School at Mt Roskill Memorial Hall. The end of year party for the children was held on Sunday, December 3.
These children aged between six and 14 participate in several extra-curricular activities and workshops throughout the year.
The year-end party included games, quizzes, a secret Santa, Christmas crafts, music and delicious food.
As a custom, the children come with their 'secret Santa' gifts and present them to their chosen mates in the class. The party also included an educational workshop on the significance of celebrating Christmas followed by playing Christmas quizzes, games and singing Christmas carols.
