A five-year-old boy who died in a road accident on Friday night, February 26, has been laid to rest in Auckland earlier this week. Police identified the victim of the crash as Ashton Aahil Maharaj of Manurewa, Auckland.

Emergency services were called on Friday night around 10 p.m. near SH37, between Brett and Rerewhakaaitu roads, after reports of a single-vehicle crash

Police revealed that four other people with a range of injuries were taken to the hospital and declared later that night that a child had died as a result.

Ashton Maharaj is of Fiji-Indian descent and survived by his parents Anish and Anjana Maharaj, and his elder brother.

Ashton’s last rites were conducted at Anns Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 3, which was joined virtually via video feed by thousands of family and friends of the mourning parents from around the world.

Ashton was born in Fiji in 2016, and his parents moved to New Zealand two years later, living in Mt Roskill and later in Manurewa.
