Waitakere Indian Association hosts its maiden diversity cricket tournament

Waitakere Indian Association earlier this month hosted its first T20 cricket tournament bringing diverse sections of the community to participate in one of the most popular sports in the world.

Named WIA Diversity T20 Cricket Cup, the one-day tournament featured six teams who played the knockouts games giving two teams at the end for the finale.

The sports tournament was supported by Sports Waitakere and Auckland Cricket and played at Eastdale and Riversdale grounds in Avondale.

The final match was played between Gladiators 11 and Baruchi 11 as the former came out victorious chasing 229 runs losing six wickets and eight balls to spare.

“It was an amazing event; we had good participation not just from the players but also spectators supporting the teams.

“We also saw three generations of a family playing in the tournament which is rare, and a special feat for our Association,” Sunil Kaushal, president of Waitakere Indian Association said.
