The Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand (BJANZ), a registered not-for-profit community organisation, marked the vibrant celebration of Hartalika Teej, one of the most significant festivals for women in Bihar and Jharkhand, with grandeur and devotion.
This year’s main celebration was hosted at the residence of BJANZ Executive Member Shalini Alok, where community members came together to perform traditional rituals, offer prayers, and enjoy cultural festivities. Women dressed in shades of green and yellow, symbolising prosperity and harmony, observed the sacred fasting rituals dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.
Hartalika Teej, rooted in Hindu tradition, celebrates the divine union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Women undertake a nirjala fast (without food and water), praying for marital bliss, the well-being of their husbands, and family harmony. Beyond spirituality, the festival also fosters friendship and cultural connection as women sing folk songs, apply mehendi, and share festive joy.
Speaking on the occasion, Shalini Alok, Strategy Partner at BJANZ and host of the event, said: “Hosting this celebration was a privilege. It’s inspiring to see our community uphold these traditions with such dedication, ensuring that our cultural roots remain strong for future generations.”
BJANZ President Amit Shankar Verma added, “Hartalika Teej is not just a festival; it is a celebration of devotion, cultural heritage, and community bonding. We are proud to keep these traditions alive in New Zealand and share them with the next generation.”
The Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand has been actively working to promote cultural, social, and community engagement among people of Bihar and Jharkhand origin, contributing significantly to New Zealand’s multicultural fabric.
