The Chinese Embassy in Wellington has accused New Zealand’s security and intelligence agencies of harassing Chinese nationals at airports, alleging that a recent traveller was interrogated without justification and had personal devices confiscated.
In a statement released late on Tuesday, the embassy confirmed it had lodged a “serious representation” with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and warned it may take further action.
According to the embassy, a Chinese citizen “was subjected to harassment and interrogation without cause by NZ security and intelligence agency personnel” while in transit. “His personal digital devices were confiscated, and some of them have not been returned to date,” the statement added.
The embassy called the incident “deplorable and unwarranted,” citing similar reports from other locations. It demanded that such actions cease immediately, insisting that Chinese students, tourists and other travellers are entitled to a “safe, fair and non-discriminatory” environment.
It also issued a warning to Chinese nationals travelling to New Zealand, advising them to “remain vigilant” and report any cases of harassment or discrimination to consular officials.
“The Chinese side reserves the right to make further responses,” the embassy said.
