Amazfit has finally launched its third iteration of its GTR and GTS series of smartwatches. Unlike last year it has released 3 new models with a special Pro model for the GTR lineup. So the newly announced models are GTR 3 Pro, GTR 3 and GTS 3.
All three watches have similar basic features but they each have unique strengths. The first is the premium choice, the second is a battery champ, and the third is thin and light. Let's look at all the three starting with the Pro which is also the most advanced of the lot
Amazfit GTR 3 Pro
The Amazfit GTR 3 Pro weighs only 32g and is made of aircraft-grade aluminium alloy. It is covered with a curved piece of glass. It is offered in two versions – Brown Leather (strap) with a light grey body and Infinite Black with a dark grey body and a black fluoroelastomer strap.
The Pro has a larger display than the previous model, measuring 1.45 inches. It is both sharp (331 PPI) and bright (peaking at 1,000 nits). Because of the narrow bezels (70.6 per cent screen-to-body ratio), the watch is the same size as the standard GTR 3 (1.39" display, 66 per cent Screen to Body ratio). In addition, the refresh rate of the screen has been increased by 67%.
There are over 150 watch faces available, and each face has a matching Always On Display to save power consumption. Some watch faces are editable, which means you can customise which widgets appear on them (heart rate, steps, weather, etc.).
The watch has two buttons and the top one is actually a crown. It can be used to scroll through menus and longer notifications.
The Amazfit GTR 3 Pro has over 150 different sports modes. It is 5 ATM water-resistant, so you can swim with it, and for the first time, it can track your heart rate while swimming.
Amazfit says The Pro model supports satellite positioning based on the five major providers(GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BDS, QZSS), which increases position lock time by 20% and accuracy by 40%. The watch can monitor VO2 Max, pace in comparison to previous runs, full recovery time, and other metrics.
The watch includes a built-in microphone and a speaker, for phone calls, Amazon Alexa and the offline assistant (which accepts commands in English, Spanish and German with no Internet connection).
The watch relies on the phone’s internet connection and it has 2.3 GB of internal storage for loading music.
Amazfit says that battery life is 12 days with normal usage, and it is half of that with extreme scenarios. The watch can last 35 hours of continuous GPS tracking. There is also a Battery saver mode available to stretch the battery life with few adjustments.
Amazfit GTR 3
The Amazfit GTR 3 shares the Pro model's aluminium body design, though the display is slightly smaller at 1.39 inches. It has a similar pixel density for a sharp image and can reach 1,000 nits of brightness. However, the slightly thicker bezel means that the screen-to-body ratio is 66 per cent.
It is available in Thunder Black and Moonlight Grey, with silicone straps in both colours. This one has over 100 watch faces to choose from all of which come with an Always On Display mode version.
The standard GTR 3 comes at a lesser premium asking from the Pro. It has a longer battery life, lasting up to 21 days under normal usage (a week longer than the previous GTR 2) and 10 days with heavy usage (or up to 35 days with Battery Saver mode). The watch also includes a GPS receiver and can run for 35 hours on a single charge.
Amazfit GTS 3
The GTS series has a rectangular screen, which is more suited to reading notifications and using watch apps than round screens. This model also has a larger screen, increasing from 1.65 inches to 1.75 inches. This display is the sharpest, largest, and most space-efficient in the third generation, with 341 PPI pixel density and a 72.4 per cent screen to body ratio. Like the other two, it has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and an Always On Display mode
The Amazfit GTS 3 comes in three colours: Graphite Black, Terra Rosa, and Ivory White. The watch is extremely light, weighing only 24.4g and measuring 8.8 mm in thickness (not counting the heart rate sensor bump).
However, the battery life is only comparable to the GTR 3 Pro at 12 days of typical use and 6 days of heavy use, with a total of 24 days with Battery Saver. The battery will be depleted in 20 hours if GPS tracking is enabled continuously. That's still far superior to the GTS 2, which typically lasted 7 days.
Zepp OS
Amazfit is introducing Zepp OS, which features a redesigned user interface, with this generation of watches. It isn't as powerful as Wear OS, but it does support third-party apps that run on an app framework designed to save power. One of the ten or so existing apps integrates with Home Connect, a cross-brand tool for controlling smart home devices.
The company is also working on a web-based app development kit that will allow anyone to create their own watch faces and even apps (with tutorials to guide you through the process). These will also be simple to share, allowing you to share your creations with others while also enjoying theirs.
The watch's health data can be synced with Apple Health and Google Fit. It is also compatible with popular apps such as Strava, Relive, RunKeeper, and others. Some of these will not be supported at launch but will be added in the near future.
Pricing and Availability
The three watches will be available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, and China first. The GTR 3 Pro will cost $230/€200, while the GTR 3 and GTS 3 will cost the same - $180/€150. India launch is yet to be announced but according to the previous records it should be anytime soon around the corner
