Why has the recruitment consultant I have seen, not gotten me a job yet?

Continuing on from my article two weeks ago, many readers of the Indian Weekender have been sending me questions around finding a job and getting tips on how they can get a job sooner. There were 2 questions that stood out to me, which I am publishing here for all readers to learn from.

Why has the recruitment consultant I have seen, not gotten me a job yet?

It is important to remember that recruitment consultants work for their clients – and their clients are employers. Some people have the misconception that the consultant’s primary goal is to help job-seekers get new jobs. You need to understand their primary goal is to help a company find the most suitable worker or employee. So if you aren’t getting jobs through them, it wouldn’t be correct to fault or blame them. You need to reflect and consider what you can do better.

Some suggestions are to:

• Ask them for honest feedback on why you haven’t been put forward for any jobs lately.

• Consider up-skilling. Such as doing courses.

• Getting experience elsewhere. Even if this means doing volunteer work, for example at the company you are working for now.

• Think about improving your CV, and getting job interview coaching – which is a service I provide.

Also try to be in touch with more than one recruitment consultant. Having 4 or 5, who know of you, would be ideal.

If they have just advertised a job you are confident you would suit – don’t wait for them to call you. Send them a quick email or call them whenever you see a job they are advertising that you think you would be suitable for.

I missed out on a job, but I wish I could still apply for it. What can I do?

Most jobs will clearly show their deadline on the job ad. However, if you did miss out on applying for a job, and it was not that long ago – perhaps say up to 3 days late, you can still try to apply. Google search the company which was advertising the job and call them. Ask them if you can put in an application and email it directly.

This will also help you get considered for any future jobs that might be suitable for you.
