The Southern Institute of Technology Fashion students explored the world of high fashion last Thursday and Friday at the Dunedin ID Fashion Awards. The group of 32 attendees comprised of all the degree students and the 3 tutors. Students were exposed to the creativity and flare of the Emerging Designers show, iD Fashion Week fashion show, Larnach Castle and the Dunedin Museum to help inspire their own designs.
Programme Manager Paulette Caullton said “Last year the year one students went because the year two students go to World of Wearable Arts in Wellington and the year three students go to Auckland for New Zealand Fashion Week and we thought it would be a good idea to take the year one students for a trip. We all liked it so much that we thought it would be great for the year two and three students to join them this year.”
Paulette also adds “it was great for the students to see what other students have produced and to be able to visit new fabric stores. Also as it is the beginning of the academic year it is a great opportunity for our students to get to know each other and for the year one students to meet those from year two and three as it helps with motivating and inspiring each other. Paulette also adds that it is SIT’s aim to have year 3 of the Bachelor of Fashion students enter the Emerging designer section in 2015. ”
Paulette comments that “we also have many students enter into the Hokonui Fashion Awards with 20 students entering this year. We have had students previously win events such as Steam Punk and Southland Designer.”
