It’s back – and it’s bigger and brighter than ever. Christchurch Teeyan da Mela returns this month on 21st July. This year, the Mela will be showcasing Punjab –a land with a wealth of culture, history, tradition, beliefs, music and arts. Teeyan da Mela is a festival to celebrate women. Traditionally the festival is celebrated on the onset of monsoons in India and is dedicated to women.

Organised by Hitesh Sharma and Nitika Bhullar, Christchurch Teeyan da Mela promises to be a vibrant festival full of colour and flavour. Dress rehearsals for the festival have begun and going by the current performances, it appears that it is going to be cracker of a show.

Organiser Hitesh Sharma told The Indian Weekender that within one year the festival has become quite popular amongst the Indian community and the wider community. Apart from folk songs, dance and giddha (traditional Punjabi dance), this year’s Mela will also feature Miss Teeyan competition, Children’s fancy dress competition and various other cultural performances. There will be prizes for audience as well including the Best Traditionally Dressed Couple prize. At the end of the performances, there will be a DJ for the rest of the evening to let people show some moves on the dance floor. The added presence of the food stalls will add another flavour to the festival.

The event will be held on 21st July at YMCA Centre in Bishopdale from 4:00 pm to 8:00pm.
