The wait is over and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has delivered a baby girl.

The baby girl arrived on Thursday, June 21, at 4.45 pm, and both mother and baby are reported to be healthy.

This was announced a short while ago by her partner Clarke Gayford on their Facebook page.

With this announcement, the long anxious wait is over and the nation can rejoice and start celebrations.

Earlier, Mr Gayford had driven Ms Ardern to Auckland City Hospital (in their personal car) at 5.50 a.m, where she was taken to hospital birthing unit.

The news of Ms Ardern's arrival in the hospital has created much excitement among the patients and visitors, with everyone predicting the expected new arrival's gender.

Good wishes started flowing from all around the world, with several world leaders, visiting foreign dignitaries in country extending their good wishes for the couple and the nation.

Earlier in the day, National party Deputy Leader, Paula Benett moved a motion in NZ Parliament, which was passed in a record time without any disagreement, of extending good wishes to the expectant nation's first couple.

Interestingly, as reported by Radio NZ, if the prime minister's baby is born today he or she will share a birthday with Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who is the only other elected leader to have given birth while in the role.
