Four times Kiwi-Indian MP, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, was honoured with the Sikh Achievers Award by the Mumbai-based Sat Sri Akaal Charitable Trust on Sunday, February 11, 2018.
The award was constituted by the Sat Sri Akaal Charitable Trust to recognise work of Sikhs from across the globe that have added value not just to their lives but to people and communities around them.
The trust considers men and women from areas of entrepreneurship, social-preneurs, sports achievers and social service people for this award.
Sardar Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi’s profile was considered unique by the judges. He migrated to a new country with no links or networks, established his means of earning a living while supporting his young family and despite all challenges managed to prove his ability to be selected as a candidate for New Zealand’s Parliament.
Mr Bakshi is the first Indian origin and Sikh parliamentarian in New Zealand and is now in his fourth term as a parliamentarian.
It is these credentials that made his profile stand out for the judges.
