The High Commission of India is warning members of the Indian community in New Zealand to beware of fake callers posing as their office-representatives and asking for money or risk cancellation of their NZ visa/residency.

The office of the High Commission has issued a media release warning people to not fall into the false trap of opportunist scammers, and lose their hard earned money.

“It has been brought to the notice of the High Commission of India that Indian passport holders in New Zealand are receiving fake telephone calls threatening that the visa/residency application would be rejected unless a certain amount of money is deposited in a specified bank account or transferred through Western Union,” the press release said.

“The High Commission wishes to advise everyone that no such calls are being made by the High Commission.

“These are fake calls with a view to extort money,” the Press release further asserts.

The High Commission is further advising the victims of fraud to get in touch with the New Zealand Police at the earliest.

“We urge everyone to be alert and not to pay any money and to report any such calls to the NZ Police immediately,” the press release said.
