Bharitya Samaj celebrates International Day of Older Persons

Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust and Roopa Aur Aap on Sunday, October 1 celebrated the International Day of Older Persons at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall in Mt Roskill.

International Day of Older Persons is celebrated to honour the contributions of the elders to the society.

The event was graced by dignitaries such as Mt Roskill MP Michael Wood, Puketapapa local board Chairperson Harry Doig and members Ella Kumar, Anne- Marie Coury, Shail Kaushal, Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy, Bhartiya Samaj Patrons Hon. Dr Bruce Hucker, and Hon. Dr.Ashraf Choudhury QSO.

Hundreds of seniors dressed up in different ethnic colourful outfits to be a part of the event and also competed in the best-dressed competition. As a traditional practice at Bhartiya Samaj, the evening commenced with the prayers and followed by spectacular performances by some prominent faces in the community.

“It was an aural treat as some of the finest singers of the community performed at the venue, namely Viraj Maki, Vidya Teke, Shrisha Iyer, Guncha Singh and Shikha,” Chairperson of Bhartiya Samaj said.

As the evening progressed, elders jumped onto the dance floor to be the part of the celebrations and were later joined by many dignitaries gracing the occasion.

Two young talents Shwetha Gopi and Radhika gave their debut performances at the event, and their extensive dancing skills enthralled the audience.

The engagement of the crowd continued with the announcement of the best-dressed couple and best-dressed male and female at the event.

“All the seniors were so well-dressed that it put the judges in a dilemma in choosing a winner,” added Mr Suchdev.

The event concluded with a dinner provided by the Bhartiya Samaj team at the venue.

The event was yet another milestone achieved by Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust in their efforts to socially engage the senior members of the community and laud their efforts towards building a better society.
