A couple has died following an accident in Christchurch on Tuesday, September 12.
Police were alerted at 5:45 p.m. to a car submerged in a lake near Westlake Drive, Halswell Christchurch.
Police were at the scene with other emergency services, and some police and fire staff entered the lake to check the vehicle.
The Police National Dive Team arrived in Christchurch accident site to assist in the search for two people unaccounted for after a car went into a lake.
Police on Wednesday, September 13 recovered a car and two bodies from a lake in Halswell, Christchurch.
The bodies recovered were those of a 31-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man.
According to Herald.co.nz, the couple were identified as Sheetal and Avneel Ram by Sheetal’s brother-in-law Hinesh Kumar and a female relative at the scene today.
According to media Avneel Singh was teaching his wife driving when she accelerated into the lake, and her husband tried to rescue her.
Police liaison officers and Victim Support staff are assisting the wider family of the two victims at this tragic time.
The couple’s family and friends grieved at the scene this morning along with their five-month old daughter.
The Fiji Indian couple is originally from Suva, Avneel lived in New Zealand for five years while his wife Sheetal came just one year before from Fiji. The family members are taking the couple's daughter care.
