Prime Minister Bill English last week unveiled the foundation stone of a $40 million five-star hotel, office and retail development - the first mixed use project since the Christchurch rebuild started – located in Central Christchurch. The total site size of the mixed use Sudima Christchurch Victoria development is 2,336m2 which includes a commercial office, a 86 rooms five-star hotel and 700m2 of retail comprising restaurants, a day spa, and café. Early work on the site is underway and the development is scheduled to be completed in November 2018.
Mr Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala, Chief Executive Officer of Sudima Hotels and Resorts, which already operates four hotels in New Zealand, noted, “The development of a new five-star hotel shows the growth of the tourism sector in the Canterbury region and demand for hotel accommodation. This is a flagship project for us in the Canterbury area. The hotel offers self-serviced apartments to cater for both long and short term guests.”
Notably, Sudima Christchurch Victoria will be based around fully serviced apartments with a South Island theme. The interior design of the common areas and apartments will be inspired by the Canterbury landscape. Line, form, colour, materials and texture used will reflect the local environment, informed Mr Neil Wyatt, Ignite Architect’s Project Lead for the development.
