Young people have the unique opportunity to have their voice heard in New Zealand’s Parliament during Youth Parliament 2010 in July.

National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi is looking for a candidate.

If you are a motivated young person between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age with a passion for politics, this could be a life changing experience for you.

Youth Parliament is held once every three years enabling young people to express their views to our country’s decision makers and a first hand understanding of the parliamentary process. Young people will also learn how to effectively contribute to government decision-making systems and procedures on issues of national and regional importance.

The successful candidate will take Mr Bakshi’s position at Parliament as a Youth MP, for two days on July 6 and 7. They will have the opportunity to work on a submission for a Youth Parliament Bill. They will also participate in Question Time debating on the Bill, a Select Committee Inquiry and a Party caucus session.

Young people who are active in the community and passionate about youth issues are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be required to canvass the opinions that are of particular interest to the youth in their electorate.

The successful applicant will carry the “Youth MP” title for six months and will work closely with Mr Bakshi and his office.

Interested candidates are required to write a letter on why they should be chosen as a Youth MP.

Applications must be sent by March 1, 2010 to PO Box 23136, Hunters Corner, Auckland 2025, or email bakshi.mp@parliament.govt.nz
