A person has died after a fire in a shed at the back of a Christchurch property on Tankerville Rd, Hoon Hay on Thursday morning, February 9.
The death remains a mystery even after more than 36 hours after the body was found.
By Friday evening, police and specialist officers were continuing a scene examination and were still working to confirm what might have happened.
"We are continuing to liaise with the family of the deceased, who have been assisting us with our inquiries," Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney was quoted by Stuff.co.nz as saying.
"We send them our deepest sympathies during this difficult time."
A post-mortem was carried out on Friday and police would remain at the scene overnight.
The Christchurch's Indian community was in shock and was rallying behind the family of the deceased.
The property is reportedly owned by an Indian woman Savita Naidu, who lives there with her three children.
Canterbury Sangam community member Sunny Nambiar said, “The community is grieving at the moment. They are all getting together to give some support to the family and the children."
Police wanted to hear from anyone who noticed the fire in Tankerville Rd about 8 a.m. on Thursday, or any other activity in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to call Christchurch police on 03 363 7400, or can provide information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
