Prime Minister John Key has announced Dr Parmjeet Parmar MP as the National Party candidate for Mt Roskill by-election scheduled to be held on December 3.

In a Facebook post, PM said, "Congratulations to Dr Parmjeet Parmar MP on being selected as the National Party candidate for the Mt Roskill by-election in Auckland on 3 December. She’s been working hard in Mt Roskill for the past two years, understands the local issues and will run a strong campaign. I’m looking forward to seeing Mt Roskill voters on the campaign trail with Parmjeet."

The Mt Roskill seat was vacated after Phil Goff was elected the new Mayor of Auckland on October 9.

Parmar's major competitors are Labour party's candidate Michael Wood and newly formed NZ People's Party candidate Roshan Nauhria. It is important to note that Phil Goff of Labour party had held the Mt Roskill seat since 1999 elections. It would be interesting to see if the electorate gives a chance to a new party or would bring New Zealand Labour Party back.

Stay tuned for more updates.
