Phil Goff has been elected Auckland Mayor as per the progress results, with 179,206 votes. Vic Crone received the second highest votes, 105,413, followed by the youngest mayoralty candidate Chloe Swarbrick receiving 26,474 votes.
In a live video on Facebook, Goff thanked Aucklanders for their support. He and the 20 new councillors will be sworn in on November 1. He replaces the Super Council’s first Mayor Len Brown as he stood down after two terms.
Goff will now resign from the parliament and a by-election will be held in Mt Roskill before Christmas.
Among the Kiwi-Indian candidates standing in the local board election, Shail Kaushal has been able to secure a position so far, from Puketapapa Local Board. He is currently at the last rank, 6th, with 5584 votes while the candidate on 7th rank has received 5534 votes. The final result will be tomorrow, October 9 after the hand delivered votes are counted.
Apart from Kaushal, Ella Kumar— Puketapapa Local Board (rank 3), and Dr Ashraf Choudhary— Papatoetoe Subdivision of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board (rank 3) have also been able to secure their positions.
No other Kiwi-Indian hopefuls have been able to get enough votes to win.
