Thousands took advantage of a glorious weather today to enjoy Auckland’s Diwali festivities at the Viaduct.
Young, old, Indians, non-Indians – they all jammed into the waterfront venue to enjoy traditional Indian food and non-stop entertainment which included Bollywood dance competitions and many other traditional items.
As one visitor remarked: “It was close to a mela in India.”
The festival was opened yesterday by Prime Minister John Key who emphasized the contributions of the Indian community to New Zealand, and the desire to promote relations between the two countries.
Diwali Festival, which traditionally celebrates the return of Bhagwan Ram from exile after 14 years, has become a prominent fixture on the local calendar throughout the country.
Non-Indians enjoy the festivities as much as Indians living in New Zealand.
Almost every traditional taste was on offer including bhel puri, pani puri, pav bhaji, masala chai, ginger chai, samosa, idli, chutney, chhole bhatoure and many others.
One of the vendors said the masala chai and samosa were among the most popular treats enjoyed by all patrons.
The evening was scheduled to end with a grand fireworks display around 10pm.
Diwali proper is next Saturday, October 17.
