British Council Kolkata on Friday hosted the 'Education UK' exhibition wherein the 'Great Scholarship' and 'Great Career Guide' were launched with 36 UK institutions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland participating in the programme.
The initiative by the British Council was a part of the strategy to woo more of Indian students as with growing competition for the limited seats in the top universities of India.
According to a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, there has been a whopping 256 percent increase in the internationally mobile Indian students in the period of 2000-2009.
This sharp rise is attributed to the lack of quality education available in the country and the challenging cutoffs posed by premium universities.
The British Council announced 370 scholarships worth almost one million pounds for 260 undergraduate and postgraduate courses exclusively for the Indian students, which also happens to be the single largest number of scholarships ever launched in India.
