Aucklanders are being urged to get to know their neighbours better during this year’s Civil Defence Get Ready week.
Auckland Civil Defence, a division of Auckland Council, is hosting events to promote the importance of being prepared for an emergency, from 23 to 29 September. The theme of this year’s awareness week is ‘Know your neighbours, know your community’.
“This is a great reminder to Aucklanders about the importance of talking with their neighbours about how they could help each other during a disaster,” says Clive Manley, Auckland Civil Defence Controller.
“During a disaster, emergency services would be heavily stretched. You could be on your own for three or more days and your most immediate form of assistance will come from your neighbours and community.”
Auckland Civil Defence will hold events around the region during Get Ready week to raise awareness about how to prepare for an emergency, including:
• displays at Albany, St Lukes and Manukau Westfield malls from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 September
• activities at the Auckland and Waitemata District Health Boards and with selected primary and intermediate schools
• weekend activities at the Auckland Museum Volcanoes exhibition
• a lecture on Thursday 26 September at the Auckland Museum
• a forum about managing volcanic risk in Auckland, run jointly with DeVoRA, a collaborative research programme which aims to improve assessment of volcanic hazard and risk in Auckland.
Faulty elections candidate booklets
Auckland Council Electoral Officer Bruce Thomas is disappointed that some candidate booklets have pages missing.
“As of this morning we have had 22 faulty booklets reported to us, out of a print run of one million. We have reviewed our stock and not found any other faulty ones.
“Affected residents have been sent new booklets and directed to www.voteauckland.co.nz
“I encourage voters to check out www.voteauckland.co.nz where all council candidate information is available online and searchable on a user-friendly site.
“Our awareness campaign also directs voters to this site.”
