Hindi language may soon be taught in New Zealand schools if a group of Auckland teachers has its way.

The Hindi and Culture Trust has initiated moves to have the teaching of Hindi language added to the New Zealand school curriculum.

Hillsborough based Pundit Dhirendra Nath told www.sandesh.co.nz that one meeting had already been held with interested parties to press ahead with the plan.

A second public meeting will be held in New Lynn on February 25 at Lyndale Athletic Hall, 36 Portage Rd (opposite Baby Factory), 7.30pm.

Pundit Nath is part of a group of former Fiji school teachers, now living in New Zealand, to are in the process of gauging public support for their campaign. Group members hold Hindi classes for children every Sunday at several locations throughout Auckland.

The plan was first mooted by Satya Charan of Manukau.

“Many languages – including Tongan, Samoan, Japanese, French, German, Spanish – are taught in New Zealand, why not Hindi?”

“The Indian population in New Zealand is now huge, and we must do whatever we can to help promote the language among our children so that they retain and language and culture,” Pundit Nath said.

“We know that it will not happen overnight, but we will press on with our request.”

Pundit Nath said after more public meetings, they would approach the Ministry of Education through their local MP to further their request.

To discuss the issue further, Pundit Nath can be contacted on 09 627-3448, or 027 694-0006.
