India’s Independence Day celebrations is again set to be a vibrant function in Auckland next month.

Preparations are well underway for the 62nd anniversary fest and the organizers are expecting another grand celebration at the ASB Theatre  in Auckland on August 16.

Jeet Sucdev, chairman of the Brharatiya Samaj Charitable Trust, said the day was expected to be as colourful as before – jam-packed with cultural events and great food stalls.

“The Independence Day of India is an occasion to celebrate the freedom of our great democracy while we remember with solemn reverence the sacrifice that thousands of our valiant countrymen gave for this cause,” Suchdev said.

“Bhartiya Samaj, along with various Indian organizations, will be commemorating the occasion - 62 Anniversary of Indian Independence on the 16th of August 2009 at the ASB Theatre Aotea Centre 50 Mayoral Drive Auckland, from 10.30am to 3pm.”

The celebrations will start with the flag hoisting at the main entrance of Aotea Square followed by cultural programmes presented by various organisations.

“New Zealand has a representation of most Indian states and cultures. It would be a fitting tribute to showcase the diverse unity of our great nation if we join together to make this a great event, reflecting various traditional entertainments,” Suchdev said.

Suchdev said a highlight again this year was the participation of the Pakistan performers during the cultural presentations. The Pakistani performers have been performing at Indian Independence Day celebrations since 2007.

And Indian performers return the favour at the Pakistani celebrations which fall on August 14, but will this year be celebrated on August 16.

“No politics involved, all communities are living here harmoniously,” said Suchdev.
