A 40-year-old Indian crewman aboard MSC Resilient III container ship has died due to an incident yesterday aboard the vessel.
Emergency services were called aboard the MSC Resilient III container ship in Bluff at 9.15 AM on Wednesday 21 December.
Maritime Union of New Zealand National Secretary Craig Harrison says details about the incident are sketchy so far. He says initial reports from local workers suggest an incident had occurred when onboard cranes were being moved by crew.
The ship, MSC Resilient III, was a cargo vessel and the incident happened while the vessel was in port.
According to police, they are working with MaritimeNZ to determine what happened.
The Resilient III is a flag of convenience (FOC) vessel registered under the Liberian flag. FOC vessels are notorious for the issues around safety and seafarers’ rights.
