Former Auckland mayor Phil Goff has been appointed as New Zealand's next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He will take up the new role at the start of next year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nanaia Mahuta said Goff had the skills New Zealand needed in London.
Goff held the foreign affairs, trade and defence portfolios and was Labour Party leader during his 32 years in Parliament.
