Wellington is gearing up for an upcoming Diwali gala event.
There are no two ways that Diwali is one of the most important festivals for the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
And the upcoming Wellington Diwali Festival of Lights 2022 endeavours to celebrate the festival of lights with full gala, glitz, and style.
The festival contributes to social and cultural inclusion, social cohesion, and the celebration of ethnic diversity.
Wellington’s vibrant Diwali festival will return to the capital on Sunday, Oct 16 2022, at the Michael Fowler Centre from 3.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
Though the event is happening at a new venue, the attendees should expect non-stop cultural entertainment, food, and Indian cultural activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Since no celebration is complete without music and musical performance, the Wellington Diwali Festival is expected to feature performances from regional and national performers showcasing traditional, contemporary, folk, fusion, Bollywood and Bhangra. However, the programme will be announced over the next few weeks.
There will be many food stalls selling delicious vegetarian food for the foodies. Food may also be pre-packed if needed.
The vent will have something to offer for everyone. For those interested in shopping, there will be retail stalls selling traditional Indian clothes and jewellery along with henna activities. To keep kids engaged, there will be Indian lantern-making activities for children and families.
The celebrations will wrap up with a colourful fireworks display along the Waterfront from 8.45 pm (TBC)
So, if you want to have a slice of Indian colours, tastes and sounds of India and South-East Asia, the Wellington Diwali Festival of Lights 2022 is the place to be.
Wellington residents are already excited and looking forward to being at the festival.
Komal Sharma, one of Wellington’s residents, says, “The festival plays an important cultural and social role in our wider communities. It is a great platform for connecting with our Indian community and getting drenched in our traditional Indian culture. I look forward to being part of the same with my family and kids."
