Stats NZ reports unemployment rose to 3.3 percent from 3.2 percent, against expectations.
Wages rose at an annual rate of 3.4 percent, the highest in more than a decade.
That is a rise from the record low of 3.2 percent for the three months to the end of March.
Businesses say finding suitably skilled staff is one of their major concerns and that has forced them to pay more to keep workers or to poach them from elsewhere.
