Heavy rain has caused surface flooding and closed roads in Christchurch, where the Avon and Heathcote Rivers have burst their banks in places, meanwhile farmers are bracing for flooding in Mid Canterbury.

Heavy rain and wind that wreaked havoc in the north on Monday has moved south.

Heavy rain has caused flooding and closed roads in Christchurch, where the Avon and Heathcote Rivers have burst their banks in places.

Torrential rain is falling on the South Island's east coast, with flooding expected across Canterbury.

There are heavy rain watches and warnings in force for the Tasman District, Marlborough, Canterbury, North Otago and Dunedin.

Northland and Coromandel can expect a short reprieve as the current weather system moves on but further rain is on the way for Thursday and Friday, MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris said.

Places that flooded last week are of concern today, he said.
