A man is critically injured after being shot by police in Kaiapoi, in Canterbury.
Officers were called to Williams Street near the intersection with Ohoka Road just before half past seven last night, where a man with a metal bar and knife was alleged to have threatened a member of the public.
The officers allege the man attacked their car with the metal bar, before making off on foot.
A short time later he was pepper-sprayed and tasered, but the police say these had no effect.
Superintendent John Price said the police then fired several shots, and the man is now in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital.
A critical incident investigation is underway and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
