Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has raised the issue of the city's gun violence with Police Minister Poto Williams.
Two men, believed to be armed, are still on the run after shooting dead one man and injuring two others in Mount Roskill on Thursday night.
Goff said the number of gun crimes in the region was undermining its residents' right to feel safe.
Williams has told him police had put more officers on the street, as well as those targeting organised crime, Goff said.
He said he fully supported the tighter gun controls implemented recently, and cracking down on irresponsible owners.
