Person taken into custody after alert at Christchurch Hospital

Armed police set up a cordon around part of Christchurch Hospital after reports of a person with a firearm.

The person was said to be in the Outpatients Building at about 10.30am.

Police did not find a gun, but officers took one person in to custody.

Christchurch Hospital has told people to attend appointment as planned following the armed police callout.

Canterbury DHB chief executive Peter Bramley said the incident had been resolved and roadblocks were no longer in place.

A person has been arrested after reports of a firearm at Christchurch Hospital.

Police were called to the hospital at 10.30am today after reports a person had entered the Christchurch Outpatient Building with a gun.

Armed police attended as a precaution but found no firearms were involved.

A 53-year-old man has been taken into custody and is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on 14 September 14, a police spokesperson said.

He is facing a charge of threatening to kill/do grievous bodily harm.

A witness said a man came into the hospital's outpatients' building and threatened to shoot someone, Star News reported.

Canterbury District Health Board chief executive Dr Peter Bramley said police were called to an incident involving a patient at the Outpatients building on the Christchurch Hospital campus earlier this morning.
