A new book commemorating the 150th anniversary of the arrival of indentured Indians to South Africa in 1860 will be launched in Auckland next week.

“Born a Hindu, Die a Hindu” has been put together by former South African man Myan Subrayan, who has penned three other books in Auckland. The 150th Anniversary of the historical journey of the first Indians to South Africa falls on November 16.

The launch will be held at the City Church Waitakere, Central Park Drive, Henderson, at 6.45pm. Guest speakers are former All Black Inga Tuigamala, and Dr Steve Kumar.

“It is written as an autobiographical style, but also offers historical and educational insight into areas that are relevant to my life journey,” Subrayan said.

The historical account also looks at apartheid in South Africa and the effects of it; the new South Africa and life post Apartheid; history of Indians in South Africa; role of sport in world politics today; and “my faith journey”.

Myan tells an up close and personal story of life in South Africa during the troubled apartheid times, with well researched accounts of the many prejudices and hardships people of colour faced.

He also provides insights into the religion of his birth, Hinduism, and his transformation through his search for truth.

“This is an amazing story that will have you laughing, deeply moved, and captivated at the power to overcome adversity.”

Subrayan’s other books are: “From Pit to the Palace”, “You Can” and “Inga: My Story”. Light refreshments will be served at the launch, admission is free.
