The Southern Premier League T20 cricket tournament has finished after seven weeks of games, and team Pitch Panthers were hailed champion for this year.

The T20 tournament was started in 2019 to provide a platform for cricket lovers to showcase their sports talents and encourage young children from diverse ethnic backgrounds to play the game of cricket.

Ten teams participated in the tournament, and the matches were played every Sunday at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush. The teams had to cross the league matches, the knockout, quarter and semi-finals and the final were held on Sunday, December 13.

Homies XI scored 103 losing all wickets, and Pitch Panthers beat the score losing only three wickets. Bowler Jassu was awarded Man of the Match for his five-wicket spell that halted Homies XI to only 103 runs.

“More than 200 people visited to watch the final match, and it was also a day for a family day out as we had arranged free bouncy castles, barbeque and Christmas gifts for children at the venue.

“We wanted to make it a fun day for the families with kids while we are promoting good cricket in the local suburbs, said Mr Swaran Katal organiser of the tournament and chairperson of Flatbush Cricket Club told The Indian Weekender.

The organisers also welcomed a Chinese organisation- Aotea Sports and Recreation to work closely with the wider Asian community in promoting cricket as a sport and organise such inter-community sporting tournaments in the near future.

The host says they are excited about the next season which is deemed to be a bigger tournament for the cricket enthusiasts.

Player Guri from Homies XI was awarded Man of the Series, Aman and Jassu from Pitch Panthers with Best Batsman and Bowler titles.
