The Wellington Punjabi Sports and Cultural Club last weekend organised the first-ever golf tournament for the Indian community in Wellington.
WPSCC in the past has organised different sporting tournaments and cultural events, but this was the first time, the club planned to host a golf tournament exclusively for the Kiwi Indian community.
A spokesperson from WPSCC Gurpreet Dhillon said, the hit and trial plan for golf tournament worked, and it received a whopping number 20 participants for the Sunday event.
“We get such participations, even for the small tournament in cricket but we were surprised by the interest in the community for playing golf,” Mr Dhillon said.
Besides the players, another score of community members turned up at the Silverstream Golf Club in Upper Hutt on Sunday, September 6 to support and cheer the participants.
The winners of the 20 participants were two with impressive long shots, Amrit Daraka with 243 metres shot and Ravinder Gill with a 220-metre shot.
“We are excited about this newfound interest in Golf by our community members and will try to host more of such events in the future,” Mr Dhillon added.
Gurpreet further added that a few more sporting events are on the cards in Wellington such as cricket tournament, badminton for women, and a few cultural events depending on alert levels in New Zealand.
