High notes not as they seem

Auckland: Police are advising small business owners, supermarket check-out staff, and casual stall holders to be wary of people presenting counterfeit bank notes.

Police are aware of two instances in the Western Area of Auckland City District this month where fake $50 notes were presented at businesses in the Pt Chevalier area.

The women using the notes have attempted to, or did purchase, low value items prior to obtaining change.

The $50 counterfeits notes are of a high quality having a clear plastic window and fern leaf. They do not, however, contain the Queen's watermark or have the denomination printed in the clear plastic window.

Anyone with information about who is making and using the notes should contact Police or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Alternatively contact Constable Gregory Walker at the Avondale Police Station on 820 5717 or e-mail gregory.walker@police.govt.nz.
