With the elections for the Mayor of the Supercity approaching, the major contenders are leaving no stone unturned to woo the various communities that make the vibrant and multicultural city of Auckland. Len Brown the Mayor of Manukau is the leading contender for the race to become the first Mayor of the Auckland Supercity. He is considered to be a down to earth and soft spoken person. He is well regarded within the community as he is a regular visitor to most Indian, social and religious functions.

Recently, Indian Weekender caught up with Mayor Brown who at the invitation of Temple President Roshan Nauhria participated in the anniversary celebrations of Bharatiya Mandir Balmoral. After a warm welcome accorded by Mr. Nauhria and Dr. Kanti Patel – Mayor Brown addressed the gathering and congratulated the prosperous Hindu community on the occasion, where he participated in the Havan ceremony and the Aarti followed by a communal lunch.

Excerpts from the interview:

IW: How do you describe the Indian Community?

Len Brown: Educated, hardworking, deeply religious, highly ethical – great contributors to our society and community.

What are the top three things you will do when you become the Mayor of Auckland Supercity.

1. Transform the transportation and infrastructure in Auckland with special focus and greater investment in public transportation involving buses, trains and ferries. 2. Transform Auckland from a gateway to a sought after tourist destination. This will bring in much of the economic growth and development leading to a prosperous city. 3. Be a uniting Mayor by bringing together the various groups and communities that make Auckland

And what three things you will do, specifically for the Indian Community?

1. Commit to a significant Indian representation in the new Supercity council in the shape of an Indian Advisory Council as strong links between the Indian Community and the new council are absolutely essential. 2. Give a personal commitment that as the Mayor of the Supercity, I will be approachable, available and accountable to all members of the Indian Community, and will remain a frequent and regular visitor to various Indian functions and events. 3. Realising the potential of India as a massive global economic powerhouse, I will strive hard to drive linkages between Auckland businesses and the opportunities India presents. With a 7% population of Auckland with Indian heritage – I will leverage this large population to open channels of growth and development for our businesses leading to more jobs. A possibility of economic and social links between Auckland and a suitable Indian city can also prove to be very beneficial and I will work towards this outcome.

Have you ever visited India ?

Not yet – but it is high on my list. My main priority will be to be a very focused Mayor of Auckland.
What is your message to the Indian Community and why should they vote for you?
My record as the Mayor of Manukau has been one of open hearted love for the community. I respect and regard the Indian Community and would request them to trust me and trust my heart.
