Waitemata Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a person in the Auckland suburb of Northcote.
Police were called to Akoranga Drive address about 5.30 p.m. yesterday following reports of someone being assaulted, Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor said.
Officers found two people injured, one critically. That person later died, while the second person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A third man was arrested at the scene and was in police custody.
Proctor said initial indications suggest the parties involved were known to each other.
No charges had been laid at this stage and a number of inquiries were still under way into the incident, he said.
"Police have a scene guard in place at the address on Akoranga Drive today while a scene examination takes place.
"A post mortem will take place with formal identification procedures to be carried out."
Police said they will not comment further on the man's identity until that had been completed and next of kin notified.
"While this incident would have been alarming for the community, police would like to reassure them that at this early stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident," Proctor said.
According to a report by NZ Herald, a person passing by the street witnessed the incident from far and heard a person on the ground call for help several times before police arrive to de-escalate the situation.
“Local, Te Aroha Devon was walking home from university when she heard the man yelling ‘Help me’ from the second floor of a Northcote resident,” NZ Herald reported.
More to come.
