The Tamil community living in Dunedin hosted two events on Saturday, November 16 to finish the festive season of Diwali with a bang.

The first event ‘Dunedin Tamil Society- Dunedin Deepavali ’ was held at Union Hall of the University of Otago that was primarily attended by families who came to the event dressed in ethnic and traditional Indian wears for Diwali themed celebrations.

Children as young as four years old presented a Tamil song and performed a dance entertaining the guests at the event. In other activities, traditional drum percussionists presented a musical, some made rangoli at the venue, one of the most essential activities of the Deepavali celebrations.

Music, dance and food was an integral part of the show that started at 4 p.m. and ended with community arranged South Indian delicacies for the guests.

The second celebratory event was ‘Kolaveri Night’ organised by Otago Tamil Students and Dunedin Tamil Society. This part of the celebration event was arranged for a younger set of crowd featuring Tamil DJ Ashwyz (Ashwyn Sathanantham).

The theme of ‘Kolaveri Night’ was more of a dance party for the students to take a break from studies and have a fun night with friends.
