New Zealand Police are advising small business owners, supermarket check-out staff and casual stall holders to be wary of people presenting counterfeit bank notes.

Police are aware of six instances in the Western Area of Auckland City District last month where fake $50 and $100 notes were presented at businesses and stalls in Mt Roskill and Pt Chevalier.

The young men using the notes have attempted to or did purchase low value items prior to obtaining change. Three offenders who used fake notes at the Wesley Community Centre have been described as Maori or Polynesian, Somalian and Asian.

Police are also aware of a report that $1,000 of fake $50 notes were used recently at the All Seasons Shopping Centre in Te Atatu South.

Anyone with information about who is making and using the notes should contact Police or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
