Christchurch High Court on Wednesday, December 12 sentenced Franchesca Kororia Borell for at least ten years in jail for stabbing her partner Hardeep Singh Deol on Christmas Day in 2016.
Ms Borell was found guilty of murder by Christchurch District Court in October and was sentenced the jail term earlier this week.
Ms Borell was said to be depressed and drunk on the Christmas day because she could not be with her young daughter and ended up arguing with her partner Mr Deol and stabbing him in a fit of rage.
Ms Borell denied killing her partner intentionally but admitted to manslaughter during her trial in High Court. She claimed that she had thrown the knife at him but did not mean to kill him.
The jury in October sided with the Crown’s evidence that Singh died from a single stab wound to the heart rather than injuries from the thrown knife as claimed by the assailant.
“Today, Singh's family told how they are suffering a "life sentence of loss" and spoke of a much-loved son and family member,” NZ Herald reported.
Mr Doel hailed from the Rania town of Sirsa district in Haryana, India and came to New Zealand to study hotel management in 2014 after completing his B Tech from a private college in Malout, India.
He was on a work visa and had started working as a pivot builder at Precise Water Services in Christchurch in early November 2016.
