I cannot help but grin from ear to ear as I write this, because the first thing that comes to my mind is India’s big win in the ICC Cricket World Cup. The preparations and the song and dance about the game seemed of have paid off. As us Indians sat glued to our seats until the wee hours of the night, biting our nails, it all seemed well worth it. The team did us proud. Although there are still miles to go in the World Cup journey, well begun is half done!!
We had talked in our last issue about Sachin Tendulkar’s visit to Auckland. We were very excited and were preparing to welcome the Master Blaster. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable circumstances, his plans have changed. Even though some of us might feel heartbroken at the news, let’s continue to enjoy the excitement of the World Cup.
Last week, we had shared the news of Kanwaljeet Singh Bakshi being elected the Chairman of the Law and Order committee. We’d like to share here that one of the people who voted for him was an MP from a rival party – Mr Mahesh Bindra, who later told us that he wanted to do this so that a fellow MP would be more responsible and more accountable. Such is the strength and commitment of us Kiwi-Indians.
We are proud of them both.
As the world celebrated Valentine’s Day, Arvind Kejriwal picked up the threads of his love affair with Delhi from where he left off exactly a year ago. We bring you more news from Delhi’s brand new Chief Minister and his clean sweep. It will be interesting to note how this rekindling of Delhi’s relationship works out. It does, however, seem that he has now bounced back not just more experienced but well planned and wiser.
Following on from his State of the Nation speech, Indian Weekender caught up with the leader of the opposition, Andrew Little, for an exclusive interview. Read the details of his interview in this issue.
In keeping up with the tradition of constantly creating something new for our readers, we are proud to introduce our new Health column. We start with sharing tips for summer. Here’s hoping that we make a positive contribution to the health of all our readers and you all enjoy our new endeavour.
We also bring you another serving of Migrant Tales, inspiring stories of Indian migrants to New Zealand and how their persistence and perseverance has stood them in good stead. We hope these stories inspire all those who are still struggling to establish themselves in this country.
I often talk about the three ‘P’s and I’m a big fan of them. The team at Indian Weekender often hears me quote the three ‘P’s to them – Patience, Perseverance and Persistence. If we remember these and continue regardless, there is no way we will fail to achieve what we set out to do in the first place. So no matter how difficult the circumstances are, let’s never give up the fight.
