On Full Moon Day (Punam or Purnima), the divine firmament (sky) is under the celestial sovereignty of Shravan Nakshatra (one of the twenty-seven Nakshatras).
Therefore it is called Shravan. Each day during this month is auspicious for worshipping Shambhu (Shiva). Prayers and Vedic rituals are performed in Lord Shiva temples in order to please Him. It is the Vratraj who's essence is written in our sastras in a broader aspect. Since it is the most auspicious period, one can take advantage of it by performing Shravan Maas Shiva Puja.
During this month, the cosmos is supercharged with Shiva tattvas (Shiva elements) that purify the mind, the senses, the body and the self (Soul) through the rituals dedicated to Lord ShivaAccording to Skand Puran, devotees who chant Mahamrutyanjay mantra, Panchakshar Mantra, Shiv Stotra, observe penance, does ling Abhishek with milk, yoghurt, holy Ganga water, ghee, sugar, honey, Bilva Patra, Dhatura and other sacred items dear to lord Shiv, observes fasts, offer daily prayers, He frees one from the cycle of birth and death, illness, anger, grief, etc.
It is also said devotees who in this auspicious month listen to various Shiv Katha's, sings his glories, does Satsang, have a bath in the holy water, makes various donations lord shiv purifies your mind and body, offers peace, fulfills your desires and enlightens your soul.
This is true Bhakti.
Shravan Maas is also filled with other festivals such as Haryali Teej, Naga-Panchami, Randhan Cheth, Shitla Saptami, Nori Nem, Raksha Bandhan, Rishi Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, etc. and the main one Krishna Janmasthami.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon of the Shravan month. Raksha Bandhan translates to 'Protection Bond', which signifies the promise to protect thus many people on this day also start their day by visiting temple offering rakhi's to deities at the temple praying for protection.
Krishna Janmasthami is celebrated in almost every household with great devotion and enthusiasm; the celebration starts with Krishna Katha a week ahead, concluding with Nandotsav and Dahi Handi next day of Krishna Janmasthami. It is celebrated magnificently at Shri Radha Krishna temple. For Krishna, Janmasthami temple will be open all day for the devotees.
