The man with the uniquely unforgettable voice, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, will be here to regale Auckland next weekend.
He hardly needs an introduction to his fans, the world-renowned musician best known for his melodic renditions of Qawwali, devotional music of the Sufis and Ghazals, that he is. Rahat hails from a strong musical family and has studied the art of classical music from his Uncle the legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Under the tutelage of his uncle, Rahat began his singing career when he was only eleven years old. He made his mark in the Hindi Film industry with hits like 'Mann Ki Lagan' from the movie 'Paap' for which he won the Sahara award in 2004 and 'Jiya Dhadak Dhadak' from 'Kalyug', which was nominated both in Filmfare and IIFA awards in 2006.
He has never looked back ever since. With his distinct Sufi style of rendition and a long list of hits, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has become one of the most popular singers lending his voice for major Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Naseerudin Shah and Ranbir Kapoor.
He won the Best Star Screen Playback Singer award in 2010 for his song 'Aaj Din Chadeya' from the movie 'Love Aaj Kal'.
He is now a household name in South Asia. He displayed his adorable affable style when he became one of the judges alongside Sonu Nigam on the popular reality show Chotte Ustaad on one of India’s most watched channels, Star Plus.
He has been awarded the IIFA award in 2010 and Apsara best male playback singer 2011 for his song 'Tere mast mast do Nain' from the movie 'Dabangg' and the Star Screen Best Male Playback Singer 2011 for his song 'Dil toh Bachha Hai jee' from the movie 'Ishqiya.’
In Pakistan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is famous for nationalistic songs such as Dharti Dharti, Hum Pakistan and Aman ki Aasha. He is also very well known for his various melodious tracks compiled for the Pakistani Drama industry.
This musical maestro is not only well known in the Indian and Pakistani music circuit, but has also made a name for himself in the international arena. He has performed a supporting musical role with his uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, alongside Hollywood musician Eddie Vedder of the American rock band, Pearl Jam and also contributed to the soundtrack of the 1995 Hollywood film Dead Man Walking.
In 2002, he worked on the soundtrack of Four Feathers in collaboration with the American composer of orchestral and film music, James Horner, and he performed as a guest musician.
After a sell-out performance in 2010 in Sydney, Rahat is back by popular demand with his group of musicians to perform a mixed repertoire of memorable Qawwalis, including a tribute to his late Uncle, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, devotional Sufi renditions and his greatest Bollywood hits.
Expect an unforgettable evening as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his extraordinary ensemble transport us into the beautiful world of soulful music for the first time in New Zealand.
