A grand musical bonanza is coming your way soon. Swarangal, a group of friends who made mesmerising music in the late 90s, is back for a "blast from the past" performance scheduled for March in Auckland.
From humble beginnings in the early 90s, the group has played to packed audiences in many venues of Auckland and Wellington. Due to popular demand, they crossed the Tasman to perform to a large audience in Sydney in 1999 – a grand success by Sydney standards.
Another highlight was the winning of "Battle of the Bands" competition in Auckland (by popular audience choice) where all the leading Indian bands competed. Along the way Swarangal also released a CD of their own compositions in Hindi and Tamil.
Swarangal last captivated audiences in April 2003. Although the team has always individually and collectively remained active in the music scene in Auckland, the sheer demands of organising a major quality show have kept them off the stage.
"Not a weekend goes past without someone asking as to when the next Swarangal show is," says group member Rita Krishnamurthi.
"We are 'friends who make music' and as such much of the core team has remained intact since its inception in 1991. We hail from India, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and of course little old New Zealand and speak the universal language of music."
Rita says the aim of Swarangal 2009 is to produce a show of Indian contemporary music (Tamil and Hindi), which is enjoyed by people with a variety of tastes.
"The show will include a number of choreographed dances by talented young artists dancing to our songs as they are performed live. There is a lot of glitter and fun."
Our group members are now seeking your support to help make this performance a success. They are actively seeking sponsors to share the costs of putting together a show of this magnitude.
"This will give the sponsors huge mileage as we plan to provide major exposure through the media and also on the night.
"We're expecting record attendances – and all can be assured of a spectacular night of songs and entertainment."
