Free musical night next week

Unsung stars are set to shine in a musical concert bonanza in Auckland next week.

“Mehfil” has been organized by the West Auckland Indian community, headed by chairperson Yasmin Sait.

“We celebrate Diwali, Indian Independence day, Garba nites and musical events,” Yasmin told the Indian Weekender.

“Mehfil” will be held at the New Lynn Friendship Club premises, 3063 Great North Rd, Lynn, on Saturday, May 21, from 7pm.

Yasmin said the evening’s programme, which features some of the most talented stars in Auckland, would be FREE of charge to attendees.

Proceeds from cafeteria sales will go towards the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

The night’s stars are:
* The talented cast is headed by young Shrisha Iyyer, 13, who is known as the Shreya Ghosal of Auckland;

* Viraj Maki – sings Jagjit Singhs Ghazals, his melodious soulful voice keeps the crowd in raptures;

* Arif Zia – has been singing non-classical songs for almost 12 years. He has performed with some big names like Mohd Aziz, Anwar, Shabbir Kumar, and Penaz Masani. Passionate about singing Mohd Rafi sahib songs and ghazals, he gained classical education from Prayag classical music institute India;

* Saima Siddiqui – Released an album “Nigahai” in Pakistan and will shortly release another album, she writes her own lyrics and also a poet;

* Shyamal Raval – Sings ghazal and geet, a very versatile singer;

* Sibte Hassan Mallik, a youthful bubbly singer with a modern genre of Bollywood songs;
