Huntsville, Alabama: An Indian-American was among the three people who died after being allegedly shot by a female teacher at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Friday, TV reports said on Saturday. Three people were also wounded in the shootout.
According to reports, police have identified the Indian victim as Gopi Podilla, who was chairman of the biological sciences department.
The two others killed were Maria Davis and Adriel Johnson, both professors in the biology department.
According to reports, the shooting took place at a Biology faculty meeting where the accused, Amy Bishop, a Harvard-educated neuroscientist, began shooting after she learnt she was being denied a tenure at the university.
Bishop has been taken into custody and her husband has also been detained.
"We have three dead and three wounded," college spokesman Ray Garner said.
Among the injured are two faculty members and one staff member. The injured were taken to Huntsville Hospital. Two of the injured are critical and one is stable, reports added.
